Jay Williams, who passed away in 1978, is one of my favorite authors. He created several wonderful new and unusual fairy tales featuring characters children love. Because of the enduring quality of these stories, many of them are still available in libraries and in stores. These picture books are best for children age four and older.

Looking for Work

One of my favorites is The King With Six Friends. In this story, young King Zar has no country to rule and no crown. He has a small amount of money, the clothes on his back, and a sword. His quest is to find a new job: a country in need of a king.

Cheerful and Ready to Help

King Zar is cheerful and always ready to help. On his journey, he meets six oddities—an ax, an elephant, a fire, a snake, a tree, and a swarm of honey bees. Each request help from King Zar. Each turns into a person the moment King Zar frees them from their difficulty. Each then agrees to follow and help King Zar find a kingdom to rule.

Help from Friends

Of course, since this is a fairy tale, there is a beautiful princess in need of a husband. King Zar is set a series of impossible tasks in order to marry her. With clear, logical thinking, the King leads his six friends and overcome the challenges.

This is a story you will enjoy as much as your children. It is sure to be a frequent request for re-reading. Be sure to look for The Practical Princess, and other books by Jay Williams.
