Not Working
My cell phone stopped working. There are no cell phone stores in my small mountain town. I ordered a new one. It was promised for the next day. However, a major snow storm made all the roads into town either closed or slick and dangerous. My new cell phone is not worth the life of the delivery driver. I have to wait, not one day, but five or six.
Have I made it a god?
I did not realize how often I reach for my phone until I couldn’t. It is a useful tool for both information and amusement. It is my way to contact friends, family, and businesses. It reminds me of appointments and teaches me French. It is my clock and my fitness friend. But it must be recharged. I can misplace it, lose it, or break it. It is not at all like God. Have I made it one?
Recharge
I’m horrified to discover that I reach for the cell phone more often than I reach for God. I can’t lose or misplace God. He is unchangeable and always present. I need to be recharged by God. God never needs to be recharged by me. He is available 24/7, even in small mountain towns with slippery, snow covered roads.
Forgive me, dear Lord, for depending on a small, portable cell phone rather than on all powerful, mighty You.
“O Lord, you have searched me and know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, you know it completely, O Lord.” Psalm 139:1-4 (NIV)
How about you?
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please comment either here on the website, or on my Facebook page. Thank you!
